WHAT THE BUMBLE! Treating bumble foot. 🐓

Updated: Feb 13, 2021

Before I got my poultry, I knew they were prone to feet problems, from overgrown nails, dry skin and infections, but didn’t know it was called bumble foot.

Simplified by Wikipedia “Bumblefoot (ulcerative pododermatitis) is a bacterial infection and inflammatory reaction on the feet of birds, rodents, and rabbits. Ulcerative pododermatitis is referred to as "sore hocks" when it affects a rabbit and "bumblefoot" when it affects a bird.”

Yes, bunnies can suffer from this.

When I discovered Pamela had a severe case of bumble foot I was so worried... it so advance that the bumble had solidified and was causing her extreme pain... I no longer had the option of ‘at home surgery’...

Early bumble foot you can simply make a small incision and squeeze out the puss, disinfect the area and create a poultice of apple cider vinegar, blemex lotion, and garlic puréed, soak a gauze and wrap around infected foot and wrap with no bite bandage. PetFlex No Chew Bandage, 2"

Add apple cider vinegar to their water and a little bit of garlic and I always add two drops of rescue remedy http://www.bachflower.com/rescue-remedy-information/

In my case I had to treat her orally and change her living conditions from what she was used to.

Bumble foot can develop from spending extended time on the ground and not perching, perching on something too cold or hot, harsh grounds, dirty environment , and lastly get pricked or cut by something. So I made her a hidden perch inside a blanket covered coop, with a soft rope wrapped around the perch rod. I cleaned her area daily, made sure she had the water concoction I mentioned above but I added my specialty black salt. It’s a rare salt I import ... i buy it in its purest form and I treat everything with it.. I mean everything!!! There isn’t anything it can’t cure. I have a cold - black salt, I’m injured- black salt bath, hair loss -black salt, no energy- black salt, infections -black salt, rashes- black salt, yucky people -black salt hahahah

People ask me all time to share my black salt but I pay a fortune for it and I tried over 170 different types of black salt until I found one that works.

But within two weeks she stopped limping and by 1 month she had zero trace that she ever had bumble foot and her feathers got more vibrant and beautiful and she got some added attitude to her cookooo... now I’m always having to say “don’t talk back to mama”

Steps to prevent bumble foot:

  1. Keep their grounds clean

  2. Ensure no sharp objects can hurt them

  3. Put apple cider vinegar in their water and occasionally add some garlic

  4. Make sure they have a soft place to perch

  5. Have a place where they can sand bath and clean tub of water (leg deep) that they can splash around in but not drown (only ducks can swim)

  6. Ensure their diet is good and bountiful. Bad diet, bad immune and you will have sick birds.

  7. Keep an eye on them to see if symptoms such as limping, always lifting one leg up, or showing signs of being lethargic occur.

Do all this and you will have happy healthy chickens that are bubbly not bumbly!!
